Beatriz Milhazes has been internationally acclaimed as one of the leading figures in contemporary Brazilian art since the 1990s. Her vibrant and intricately detailed abstractions span a wide array of media, including sculpture, installation, mural and public art, collage, textiles, and most prominently, painting. Carefully crafted with references to the tropical landscape and Brazilian cultural motifs, her compositions establish a dynamic interplay between precision and spontaneity. Geometric forms echoing the visual language of the Concrete and Neo-Concrete movements merge with elements of Carnival, bossa nova, and traditional art and crafts such as lacework and embroidery. Minimalism and flat surfaces converge with chromatic exuberance and richly layered textures. Her exploration of ornamentation ranges from baroque flourishes to Carnival embellishments, blending popular vitality with classical formal rigor.

Beatriz Milhazes holds a degree in Social Communication and studied at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, completing her training in 1983. In 1984, she took part in the landmark exhibition Como Vai Você, Geração 80? at the same institution, where she would later serve as a painting instructor and educational coordinator from 1986 to 1996. Over the subsequent decades, she solidified her presence in both national and international art circuits, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions at prestigious institutions, and engaging in a variety of special projects across different contexts.

Notable exhibitions include her participation in the 60th (2024) and 50th (2003) Venice Biennale in Italy; the 6th Shanghai Biennale in China (2006); and the 24th (1998) and 26th (2004) São Paulo Biennial, Brazil. Her major solo shows have been held at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA (2025); Tate St. Ives, UK (2024); Turner Contemporary, Margate, UK (2023); Pace Gallery, New York, USA (2022); Long Museum, Shangai, China (2021); MASP, São Paulo (2020); White Cube Bermondsey, UK (2018); Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, Portugal (2012); Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland (2010); Stephen Friedman Gallery, London, UK (2010) and MoMA, New York, USA (2002).
