No Martins

About

1987, São Paulo, Brasil
Lives and works in São Paulo, Brasil

In paintings, installations, objects, performances, and diverse languages, No Martins investigates multiple relationships of collective living in the Brazilian population, primarily among Black people. His practice emphasizes the historicity of social structures inherited from colonialism, questioning the tools that maintain power, such as justice and security, or spatial and economic stratification. Creating conceptual operations that activate objects and words, Martins directly implicates the viewer in the debates and situations his work approaches. While creating precise chromatic and pictorial compositions, Martins conceives of scenes of shared existence and commonality which are strongly subjective in nature and that challenge the narratives in images that have predominated throughout the history of art.

Martins held his first solo exhibition, Poéticas negras, at Senac Lapa Scipião, São Paulo, Brazil (2017). Since then, he has presented solo shows in Brazil and internationally, in spaces such as Museu de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2026); Millan, São Paulo, Brazil (2024); Mariane Ibrahim Gallery, Chicago, USA (2023), and Paris, France (2021); Jack Bell Gallery, London, UK (2020); Centro Cultural São Paulo – CCSP, Brazil (2019); Baró Galeria, São Paulo, Brazil (2019); Instituto Pretos Novos – IPN, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2019). Martins has also taken part in a range of group exhibitions which include 4th Frestas Trienal de Artes: do caminho um rezo, Sesc Sorocaba, Brazil (2026); Os avessos do avesso da Liberdade, Solar dos Abacaxis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2025); Dos Brasis: Arte e pensamento negro, Centro Cultural Sesc Quitandinha, Petrópolis, (2024) and Sesc Belenzinho, São Paulo, Brazil (2023); When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, at Zeitz MOOCA Museum, Cape Town, South Africa (2022); 37th Panorama da Arte Brasileira, MAM São Paulo, Brazil (2022); 21st Bienal de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_VideoBrasil, São Paulo, Brazil, for which he won the Sesc Award for Contemporary Art (2019); and Histórias afro-atlânticas, MASP, and Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo, Brazil (2018).

His work is present in the collections of institutions such as MASP, Brazil; MAM São Paulo, Brazil; Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil; and Sesc São Paulo, Brazil.
