Almeida & Dale presents ÇA, a solo exhibition by the Minas Gerais-born artist Rita Lessa, at its exhibition space located at 1430 rua Fradique Coutinho, in São Paulo.

The exhibition brings together a group of recent paintings and sculptures that evoke hybrid creatures resembling monsters or fantastical beings, alongside a series of textile works.

Moving between figuration and abstraction, Lessa’s paintings weave together a myriad of references to the history of Western art, including Bosch, Goya, Marcelo Grassmann, and, above all, Surrealism, forming a repertoire of figures and gestures organized under the title ÁLBUM.

Antonio Gonçalves Filho, Cultural Director of Almeida & Dale, explains: “In Rita Lessa’s case, her entire body of work is divided into sections. Organized according to a logic similar to Warburg’s Atlas, the Brazilian artist’s ÁLBUM is one of these sections, comprising paintings such as those featured in this exhibition. The titles of the series are deliberately unrelated to their content, reflecting the artist’s critical need to confront what she calls the ‘imposture’ of language.”

The same logic applies to the exhibition’s title: “Lessa satirizes authoritative discourse by giving her works anarchic titles in the spirit of Lewis Carroll. The exhibition’s title itself, ÇA—the French demonstrative pronoun—is one such provocation,” Gonçalves Filho concludes.
