Part of the “Clube” series, the solo project by Maxwell Alexandre at Art Basel Miami Beach’s Kabinett sector consists of panoramic oil paintings on brown Kraft paper, as well as a group of oil pastel portraits on linen, depicting everyday life inside Clube de Regatas Flamengo — a prestigious multi-sports club in Rio de Janeiro — and the surrounding landscape visible from within its grounds.
This elite recreation and sports facility is situated in the wealthy neighborhood of Gávea, adjacent to the favela of Rocinha, where Maxwell was born. Examining the visual and symbolic repertoire of this space, the artist reveals the subtle social choreography of bathers and the persistent racial and class tensions embedded in everyday life in Brazil, inviting us to ponder: What does it mean to construct a place of safety in a turbulent world?
