Felipe Cohen presents a new set of works in The Stillness of Things, his latest exhibition at Almeida & Dale 1430. The exhibition, accompanied by a text by curator Diego Matos, continues Cohen’s exploration of the relationships between space, matter, perception, and the passage of time.

By evoking landscapes through processes of simplification, reduction, and synthesis, Cohen creates sculptures, objects, and reliefs in stone, wood, and tracing paper that produce situations of suspension or transformation.

The exhibition is organized into three main groups. In the works from the Cercamentos series, landscapes and elements of the natural environment—such as waterfalls and valleys—are reduced to white volumes delimited by wooden structures, in an interplay of planes, depths, light, and shadow. The sculptures Cachoeiras and Névoa nas Montanhas, made primarily of marble, granite, and limestone, transpose the landscape into three-dimensional space, while Nuvens Baixas and Livros propose a shift in perspective, making emptiness, transparency, and absence constitutive elements of the image.

“From scenes of the surrounding space (whether natural or built) to the architectural elements that define passages and divisions of space; from structural elements to objects that fit in our hands, the artist offers us representations of certain presences and actions in time,” Matos describes. “For this reason, each work is the result of a feasible exercise, faced with infinite possibilities where formulation and dilution seem to alternate constantly. Viewed from another perspective, it is as if they represented a fraction of time held in suspension,” he concludes.

The Stillness of Things remains on view through October 24.
