In September, Almeida & Dale opens Two Big Footers, an exhibition by Japanese artist Atsushi Kaga in dialogue with the work of Tarsila do Amaral. Held at the gallery’s exhibition space at 1360 Rua Fradique Coutinho in São Paulo, the exhibition brings together paintings and drawings by Tarsila produced between 1923 and 1970, alongside a new body of paintings by Kaga, conceived through his investigation into the work of the modernist painter.
Since the early 2000s, Atsushi Kaga has developed a pictorial universe inspired by references from pop culture, anime, and manga, populated by anthropomorphic characters and autobiographical elements that here revisit and transform motifs, themes, and forms from Tarsila’s work. In turn, the modernist works brought together in the exhibition span different moments of her career, from her so-called Anthropophagic phase to her later works, characterized by a dreamlike atmosphere and affinities with Surrealism.
