Almeida & Dale’s presentation at Expo Chicago 2025 is centered around Afro-Brazilian artists stemming from multiple time periods, regions, and movements, celebrating both its deep-rooted traditions and its ongoing renewal in contemporary artistic practices. Works by pioneering artists such as Agnaldo Manuel dos Santos (1926–1962), Heitor dos Prazeres (1898–1966), Mestre Didi (1917–2013), Miriam Inez da Silva (1937–1996), and Rubem Valentim (1922–1991) are shown alongside contemporary names like Lidia Lisbôa (b. 1970), Maxwell Alexandre (b. 1990), No Martins (b. 1987), Rebeca Carapiá (b. 1988), Sidney Amaral (1973–2017), and Sonia Gomes (b. 1948).
The selection is thoughtfully arranged by thematic or formal affinities, highlighting connections and dialogues across generations of Brazilian artists and their approaches to themes such as language, spirituality, the art system, memory, subjective strengthening, and political and racial struggle.
