For SP-Arte 2024, Almeida & Dale presents a selection of works encompassing different periods, from early 1920s Brazilian modernism to contemporary art, a diverse and wide-ranging selection that represents the multifaceted character of its collection and the vast scope of its artistic program. Among the works presented at the show are iconic pieces by key artists in the history of Brazilian art, including Amilcar de Castro,Sidney Amaral, and Luiz Sacilotto, whose estates are represented by Almeida & Dale.
The exhibition features key figures of contemporary art, such as Gabriel Orozco, Hank Willis Thomas, Adam Pendleton, Gerhard Richter, Adriana Varejão, and Beatriz Milhazes. Oscillating between exuberance and restraint, figuration and abstraction, the exhibition showcases the extensive panorama of recent painting and the artists’ various interpretations of historical artistic currents, from Baroque to AbstractExpressionism and Geometric Abstraction.
The selection also highlights Almeida & Dale’s pioneering work in recovering, researching, and promoting the work of artists whose careers have been overlooked in institutional and commercial circuits, aneffort that contributes to dynamizing the art scene both locally and internationally. We’re pleased to present artists such as Japanese-Brazilian Tikashi Fukushima, who played a central role in the development of Lyrical Abstraction in the mid-20th century; and Hélio Melo, a painter and former rubber tapper from Acre whose work was featured in a dedicated gallery at the 27th Bienal de São Paulo (2006) and returned to the exhibition circuit in 2023, in the solo show presented at Almeida & Dale in São Paulo.
Among the exhibition’s many highlights are works by Gerhard Richter and Cildo Meireles, which illustrate propositions linked to conceptual art and the new avant-gardes of the second half of the 20th century. Artworks by Ismael Nery, Leonilson, and Sidney Amaral draw on the intersections between art, memory, andsubjectivity. The show also highlights the work of Lygia Pape, in parallel with a solo show at Almeida & Dale gallery from March through June, Lygia Clark, Sergio Camargo, Antônio Bandeira among other key artists of 20th-century Brazilian Modern Art, an area in which Almeida & Dale has specialized since its foundation in 1998.
