Emmanuel Nassar, Gustavo Caboco, and Joseca Yanomami are featured in the 6th Montevideo Biennial: Amazonas Ancestral, opening on October 23 in the Uruguayan capital.
Caboco exhibits two embroideries that portray the ancestral connection with the land to discuss the climate crisis, while Joseca presents a series of drawings in which shamanic chants are populated by the rich vegetation of the Yanomami Indigenous Territory. Nassar joins the selection with works on fabric, in which he portrays visual and linguistic codes related to the identity of Pará.
Curated by Alfons Hug, the show’s seeks to go beyond utilitarian perspectives on the biome, challenging the idea of the “lungs of the planet” championed by Europe and North America. Instead, it proposes a poetic and aesthetic immersion, highlighting the symbolic, cultural, and spiritual richness of the forest.
