Gwangju, South Korea

Alex Červeny is one of the invited artists to the 15th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea.

Under the artistic direction of French curator Nicolas Bourriaud, the exhibition is organized around the concept of the “a soundscape of the 21st century” and bears the Korean title of Pansori.

Červeny will present seven paintings, including Boat People, a piece commissioned by the Biennale. Bringing together references ranging from Homer’s Odyssey to the current refugee crisis, passing through Melville’s Moby Dick, the artist constructs a narrative of human crossings — whether deliberate or forced — and the inevitability of engaging with the Other.

The Biennale takes place between September 7 and December 1, 2024.
