Lélia Gonzalez’s concept of Améfrica inspires an exhibition at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville. Artists featured include Grada Kilomba, Moffat Takadiwa, No Martins, and Rubem Valentim.
Hélio Menezes, part of the curatorial team of the 35th Bienal de São Paulo, is responsible for the selection of artists from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection. The exhibition traces connections between the African and American continents, highlighting the contemporary reverberations of the concept of Amefricanidade.
“By renaming the Americas with an “f” that incorporates Africa, Gonzalez proposed more than a neologism: she named a relational, political, and aesthetic cartography that reorganizes the meanings of belonging, ancestry, and creation”, points out Menezes in the accompanying exhibition text.
