Fogo corredor, a new exhibition featuring works by Alex Červený, Rayana Rayo, and Thiago Martins de Melo, opens on Saturday, November 13, at the Portas Vilaseca gallery in Rio de Janeiro.
Folk tales and enchantments associated with fire guide the group show curated by Lucas Albuquerque. Featuring 20 artists from different regions of the Brazil, the selected works echo popular knowledge, evoking the power of legends as a way of explaining the relationships between life, death, and spectral survival. Such is the case of the legend of the entity that gives the exhibition its name: “a supernatural being made of fire, part of popular beliefs in northern and northeastern Brazil, whose narratives associate it with the souls of dead people who return to scare, burn, or persecute their victims.”
Divided into two floors, the exhibition focuses on works on the ground floor that suggest a close relationship with the sacred, whether in a profane way or not. Artists Červený, Rayo, and Martins de Melo participate in this section. The third floor is devoted to ghostly representations of fire and its pop and pastiche derivations.
