Genor Sales presents his first solo exhibition in São Paulo

Genor Sales, Ninguém acerta sem primeiro errar I, 2025, watercolor on paper, 56.5 x 75.5cm (22 x 29 ½ in), ph: Filipe Berndt

Artists:
24/01 – 28/03/26
Almeida & Dale
São Paulo, Brazil

From January 24, Almeida & Dale presents The River One Swims in with One’s Eyes by Genor Sales. The exhibition brings together a new body of work that draws connections between cultures and ecosystems shaped by the waters of Brazil’s sertão and cerrado.

Popular water-related symbols appear as jars, clay water filters, and herbs which, alongside fish, inhabit the fluid universe of the artist’s new watercolors. These works evoke “a river that carries many other rivers through an assemblage of beings, forms of knowledge, objects, and practices related to water,” as noted by the exhibition’s curator, Divino Sobral.

Genor Sales is an artist and educator and is currently part of Jatobá Nascente, a studio-home project and an initiative of Sertão Negro. The idiom “a fish out of water” is one of the starting points of his visual research, through which displacement and the lack of belonging experienced by people from peripheral contexts are articulated in his compositions. Watercolor, the central technique in his practice, is closely tied to the themes that run through his work—memory, music, and territory.
