Opening exhibition at the Albuquerque Foundation in Sintra, Kilomba invites us to read the ocean floor as an archive of sedimentation and geological transformations, but also as a repository of routes and traces of human activity—often barbaric and violent: from slavery to colonialism, from countless wars to climate crises and today’s tragic genocides.

Built around objects that crossed oceans during the period of European maritime expansion—inextricably tied to histories of violence—the Albuquerque Foundation also becomes a fundamental part of the reflection proposed by the artist.

The exhibition brings together installations, sculptures, videos, drawings, photographs, and textile works, including iconic pieces and works never seen in Portugal.
