Maxwell Alexandre opens solo exhibition at Casa SP-Arte

Casa SP–Arte
São Paulo, Brazil

The upcoming project at Casa SP–Arte is the exhibition Novo Poder: passabilidade, Miss Brasil, a solo show by Maxwell Alexandre (1990, Rio de Janeiro). In partnership with Millan, the exhibition opens on August 26th and features an unprecedented production of over 20 works by the Rio de Janeiro artist.

In the series “Novo Poder” (2021-), Maxwell explores the idea of the black community within what he calls “temples of contemplation of contemporary art”: galleries, museums, cultural centers and foundations. For this, he emphasizes the colors black, white and brown as basic signs. The black refers to the black body of the characters, the white points to the idea ofthe exhibition space as a “white cube”, and the brown color represents the work of art – and also makes reference to the paper that is the main support of the series.

Firm and aware of these spaces, museums and galleries, the characters walk elegantly, as if they were walking down a catwalk. In Novo Poder: passabilidade, Miss Brasil, the artist puts fashion and contemporary art in dialogue, denoting the two fields as platforms for empowerment, which offer dignity and self-esteem to the individual.
