This Thursday, September 11, Maya Weishof opens Works on Paper at LAMB, London, her first solo exhibition in the UK. 

The show presents a set of drawings by the artist, exploring how her process of conceiving images is closely linked to the act of drawing. In these works, drawing transcends the condition of a mere preparatory exercise, functioning both as a structure and as experimentation for her research.  

“Through their materials, the drawings are as layered as their subject matter. Marks of crayon and graphite overlap with traces of oil paint lifted directly from her palette, visible in fingerprints, smudges, and residual colour from works in progress, attesting to her dynamic practice,” informs the critical text of the show. 

The works feature figures formed by sinuous lines, which perform moments of intimacy individually, in pairs, and even in groups. Weishof creates his scenes based on references from art history, myths, and personal memories, sometimes projecting small vignettes into the composition, which complicates the semantic relationship between the situations represented.
