Recoded Memories, Moffat Takadiwa’s solo exhibition, is now on view at Watson Gallery spaces at Washington and Lee University, in Virginia, USA.

Reflecting on the exhibit, Takadiwa comments: “There’s beauty when you bring western knowledge institutions to my own nonwestern knowledge.” Using materials such as computer keys, VHS tapes, and plastic bottles, Takadiwa creates large-scale compositions that repurpose technological waste into densely intricate surfaces. The exhibition explores the relationships between consumer culture, language, and memory, while drawing attention to the global systems that govern how materials circulate, acquire value, and are eventually discarded.

The exhibition is also part of a collaboration between the university and Mbare Art Space, founded by the artist in Harare, Zimbabwe.
