No Martins opens his solo exhibition Sortilégios de Desvio at the Museu de Arte do Rio.

The artist’s first institutional solo show in Rio de Janeiro, Sortilégios de Desvio brings together recent paintings and installations alongside key works from his career. Luck, mandinga, and rupture articulate an ancestral perception of time in scenes of affection set against scenes of state violence toward Brazil’s Black population. “The counterpoint here appears in the ways that the Black population keeps its culture alive—so that it is not erased—along with its health, its leisure, its development, and its evolution,” says No Martins.

The exhibition is collectively curated by Amanda Bonan, Amanda Rezende, Jean Carlos Azuos, Marcelo Campos, and Thayná Trindade.
