Feliciano Centurión, José Leonilson, and Maxwell Alexandre are featured in Collection Contemporary Art: 1975-Present, exhibition that spanning fifty years of art from the Museo Reina Sofía’s collection in Madrid, Spain. Guided by the question “how does one reach the past from the present?” the museum brings together perspectives on contemporary Spanish art in dialogue with the world.
Among the exhibition’s twenty-one sections is “Pandemic and Language,” which brings together works by Centurión and Leonilson highlighting the impact of the AIDS crisis on the artistic context of the 1980s and 1990s. Another section, “The African Is at the Center”—a term borrowed from the communities behind Madrid’s Conciencia Afro Festival—focuses on Afro-diasporic expressions in Spain and countries marked by colonization, including A lua quer ser preta, se pinta no eclipse (2023), by Maxwell Alexandre.
The long-term exhibition remains on view through 2028.
