Almeida & Dale is proud to announce the exclusive representation of the estate of Heitor dos Prazeres.
A major presence in the cultural scene at the beginning of the 20th century, Heitor dos Prazeres worked as a visual artist, costume designer, composer, and sambista. His paintings, which depict Brazilian popular culture through scenes of festivities, religious practices of Afro-Brazilian origin, samba, and bohemia, are an important testimony to the social life of the Black population in the aftermath of abolition and are essential for renewed readings of Brazilian modern art.
Celebrating the start of this collaboration, which aims to foster the recognition of the artist’s legacy, the work Sonho (1939) was donated by the gallery to the collection of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. The piece, included in the exhibition Tecendo a manhã: vida moderna e experiência noturna na arte do Brasil, held at the museum, one of the first paintings by Prazeres, documents the beginning of his career in the visual arts.
This year also marks other major events in the history of Heitor dos Prazeres, such as his return to the Bienal de São Paulo, participating in its 36th edition, Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice, as well as the beginning of the cataloguing of his entire oeuvre, coordinated by MT Projetos de Arte, with the support of Almeida & Dale and supervised by his family.
