Matamortes (2025), a new film by Thiago Martins de Melo, debuts in the opening session of the 9th Festival Ecrã in Rio de Janeiro this Thursday, July 3.
The animated feature film will have its world debut at the Federal Justice Cultural Center (CCJF), with screenings at 4:30pm and 6:30pm. Matamortes tells the saga of an anti-heroine, the daughter of a syncretized Afro-Latino god, from her conception, through her struggles against the patriarchal colonial system, to her necrosophical initiatory journey toward anticosmic liberation in the waters of Chaos.
The opening session, at 6:30pm, is followed by a talk with the team behind Matamortes and Hermano Callou, researcher, independent curator, and film critic at Revista Cinética.
Since 2016, Martins de Melo’s films have circulated through exhibitions and film festivals, garnering awards and critical acclaim for constructing a diverse and visually powerful imaginary of contemporary Brazil.
