Catalog accompanying the exhibition Urihi mãripraɨ – To Dream the Forest-Land, a solo show by Joseca Yanomami. It includes curatorial text by Bruce Albert, an anthropologist who has worked with the Yanomami since 1975 and is co-author, with Davi Kopenawa, of The Falling Sky: Words of a Yanomami Shaman (2015). The publication also presents the artist’s body of work with original captions in Yanomami, in addition to the usual translations into English.
Through his work, Joseca Yanomami creates visual translations of scenes from the world of dreams and Yanomami shamanism. In Urihi mãripraɨ – To Dream the Forest-Land, his first solo exhibition at Almeida & Dale, the artist presents works that reveal realities manifested in dreams inhabited by spirits and beings that uphold the sky and the forest-land.
