Alfredo Volpi on view in the exhibit “Brasil! Brasil!" in Switzerland
11/05/2024
The exhibition “Brasil! Brasil!”, on view at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland, explores the search for a modern artistic expression in Brazil during the first half of the 20th century.
Works from several of Volpi's phases are on in the exhibit – among them the proto-concrete phase, little known to the wider audience, also called hard edge and sensitive geometry – showcasing the diversity of Volpi's production.
The Brazilian critic, researcher and curator Lorenzo Mammì commented on this period in Volpi's career: “Alfredo Volpi’s best concrete paintings express more the seclusion of a subjectivity that, through a process of depuration, became a geometric form than the search for objectivity. They are not ideas that become realities but realities that become ideas.”
The exhibition “Brasil! Brasil!” is organized by the Zentrum Paul Klee, in cooperation with the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where it will be shown in 2025.
