Almeida & Dale presents Heitor dos Prazeres at Art Basel 2024's day one
06/11/2024
Art Basel is now open for guests. For this edition, Almeida & Dale is presenting a selection of works by Heitor dos Prazeres (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1898-1966), including oil paintings on canvas, wood and cardboard, produced mainly in the 1950s and 1960s.
Prazeres' work reflects on the post-slavery reality of Brazil's Black population by portraying his experience as a Black man, the migratory flows, capoeira, samba, religiosity and police repression. So radical was his approach, and so relevant to the struggle of Black Brazilians for freedom and equality, that he was censored in one of the first acts of the country's military dictatorship in 1964.
The selection of works for this edition highlights the artist's unique and vibrant style, characterized by the expressive use of colors and the depiction of themes related to Black Brazilian culture. His unmistakable way of representing bodies and landscapes, as well as the visual power of dance in his paintings, carries a strong sense of cultural identity.
