"Guanabara: The Embrace of the Sea" on view in Rio de Janeiro

Guanabara: o abraço do mar [Guanabara: The Embrace of the Sea], curated by Paulo Herkenhoff, Luiz Alberto Oliveira and Marcus Monteiro, is on view at the FGV headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. The group show explores the ecological, cultural and social aspects of one of the most important landmarks in Rio and Brazil – the Guanabara Bay – from the perspective of artists over the course of more than a century.  

Featuring both historical and contemporary works, the exhibition presents an 1899 painting by Eliseu Visconti, and an impressive panoramic view by Edward Nicolle Jr., James Dickson and John Le Capelain, a lithograph print dating from 1835.

Curator Paulo Herkenhoff states that “[the exhibition] is about a place we recognize as having many dimensions, it's where the first societies, the Indigenous peoples, lived. The show will display not only the cultural aspect and the landscapes, but also the interesting facts that occurred in this process”.
