Lygia Clark Exhibition Opens Tomorrow in London
10/01/2024
Tomorrow, the Whitechapel Gallery in London opens the exhibition "Lygia Clark: The I and the You," the first major retrospective of the Brazilian artist in the United Kingdom, on view until January 12, 2025. The exhibition explores Lygia Clark's trajectory, showcasing works from the 1950s to the 1970s, a period marked by substantial transformations in Brazil and new artistic approaches on the international art scene.
A central figure in the Neo-Concrete movement, Lygia Clark challenged traditional artistic conventions by incorporating active audience participation into her works. The exhibition features her early formal investigations in painting and studies, as well as her iconic manipulable sculptures known as Bichos [Critters], which invite the audience to engage physically, blurring the boundaries between the "self" and the "other." Also on display will be her participatory and performance-based works created during her exile in Paris in the 1960s, a period that profoundly influenced the experimental and engaged nature of her production.
