Mestre Didi and Rubem Valentim on view in the exhibition "Ancestral: Afro-Américas [Estados Unidos e Brasil]" at MAB FAAP
11/01/2024
Celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States, the exhibition Ancestral: Afro-Americas [United States and Brazil], on view at the Museu de Arte Brasileira da FAAP in São Paulo, provides a panorama of Afro-diasporic visual arts in both countries. With 132 works, the show brings together pieces by artists such as Mestre Didi and Rubem Valentim, who merged artistic practice with spirituality.
Religious leader and researcher of Afro-Brazilian sacred art, Mestre Didi reinterprets Yoruba visual culture – birds, snakes, spears, and flames – in pieces that evoke ancestry and sacred narratives. Rubem Valentim’s formal synthesis geometrizes Afro-Brazilian religious symbols, offering audiences insight into key aspects of Brazilian culture.
