Sidney Amaral has works showcased at Museu Afro Brasil

The exhibition “As vidas da natureza-morta" [The Lives of Still Life], on display at the Museu Afro Brasil Emanoel Araujo, in São Paulo, explores various references to still life through the works of Brazilian and foreign artists from the 19th century to the present day. Curator Claudinei Roberto da Silva drew from the institution's collection, including works from other cultural institutions in the country, as well as contributions from artists and collectors. According to Silva, “unveiling the interconnections between aesthetics, politics, and everyday life, the still life genre, present in the history of Western art since at least the 17th century, remains relevant, providing a basis for contemporary artistic speculations.” 

Among the more than sixty participating artists are Aldemir Martins, Ana Luiza Dias Batista, Anita Malfatti, Antonio Pulquério, Yêdamaria, Juniara Alburquerque, Chen Kong Fang, Dora Longo Bahia, Emanoel Araujo, Vicente do Rego Monteiro, and Sidney Amaral. 

The bronze sculpture “No banheiro de casa, os chinelos da namorada” [At Home in the Bathroom, the Girlfriend's Slippers] (2000) by Sidney Amaral included in the exhibition reveals a scene from the artist's intimate life, a central theme in his work. The thematic universe of this São Paulo-born artist's work delves into a harsh reality and addresses social, historical, and political issues related to the daily life of Black people in Brazilian society. His oeuvre, which also includes watercolor, oil painting, and installation, is present in the collection of the Museu Afro Brasil Emanoel Araujo, as well as other institutions such as the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand – MASP and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea of the Universidade de São Paulo – MAC USP. 

In 2022, he was honored with a major exhibition at Almeida & Dale, which monographic catalog can be accessed on the gallery's website.
