The Ocean is the Axis: A Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Contemporary Art

Mariane Ibrahim is proud to present "The Ocean is the Axis," a group exhibition curated by Igor Simões. With works by Rubem Valentim, Dalton Paula, Lidia Lisbôa, Agrade Camíz, Rebeca Carapiá and No Martins, this exhibition uses the concept of the ocean as an axis, highlighting the Atlantic's role as a historical and ongoing crossroads where diverse life forms and cultures intersect. 

The ocean, with its salt, foam, and memories of crossings, symbolizes a world shaped by displacement and convergence. In this context, art forms once deemed exotic, or primitive are now celebrated. Brazil, home to the largest Black population outside of Africa, has become a focal point for Afro-diasporic influence, producing profound artistic languages and sensibilities. These cultural legacies, spanning Africa and the Americas, are masterfully crafted by Black Brazilian artists. 

"The Ocean is the Axis" aims to address the global contemporary art discourse's previous neglect of Black Brazilian artists. By presenting artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibition showcases a vibrant mosaic of Afro-Brazilian contemporary art. The featured works reflect diverse expressions and resist easy categorization, offering a rich and multifaceted view of Afro-Brazilian artistry. This exhibition is a vital step in recognizing and celebrating the significant contributions of Black Brazilian artists to the art world.
