Temporal Landscapes:
Evolving Perspectives
Curated by María Inés Rodríguez
26 October 2024 to 28 February 2025
The exhibition Temporal Landscapes: Evolving Perspectives initiates a dialogue among different generations of artists whose work represents the constant transformation of nature and the uncertainty that defines our current ecological setting. Through Almeida’s installations and a selection of works from the Almeida & Dale collection – including Tomie Ohtake, Farnese de Andrade, Eleonore Koch, Djanira, Ione Saldanha, Leonilson, Joseca Yanomami and Vivian Caccuri –, we can identify a subtle yet meaningful continuity between various territories, times and artistic practices. This visual fabric not only documents environmental changes, but, by means of these artistic proposals, also invites us to rethink the ecologies that arise in response to the global crisis, in both their material and symbolic dimensions.
In this moment marked by environmental collapse and the urgent need for energy transition, the works in this exhibition transcend their role as witnesses of the deterioration caused by centuries of extractive activity. Beyond pointing to the problems, they rise as platforms from which it is possible to propose alternative ways to imagine and live in the world.
As the fulcrum of the exhibition, Marlene de Almeida’s commitment to using local and sustainable materials is deeply rooted in practices that promote environmentally friendly resources, underlining a critical reflection about the ways in which our production and consumption chains impact us both locally and globally. This perspective challenges the extractive relation we have maintained with the planet and advocates for a path towards regenerative practices that invite us to imagine other ways to coexist.
As suggested by the philosopher Isabelle Stengers in her Manifesto for Slow Science, it is crucial that we slow down and open ourselves to inclusive, non-hegemonic and collective forms of knowledge that reconsider the separation between culture and nature and promote a deeper ecological awareness. The exhibition answers this call, providing a space in which various aesthetic, ecological and cultural narratives are intertwined, all of them committed to seeking new ways to resist and regenerate in view of the current crises. Thus, art becomes a vital space where we can reconsider our relationship with the natural world, not as a passive witness, but as an active tool for imagining viable futures.
By connecting the local and the global, Temporal Landscapes invites us to rethink the scale and dimension of our decisions around energy transition. The works in this exhibition could articulate and generate possibilities for collective and creative action for environmental regeneration, encouraging viewers to imagine more sustainable and fair ways of life.
