Book launch about the exhibition at Casa Zalszupin hosts authors for a talk this Saturday

This Saturday, June 8th, Casa Zalszupin, Etel and Almeida & Dale invites you for the launch of the book “Direito à memória – arte afro-brasileira, indígena e outros modernismos” [Right to Memory – Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous Art and Other Modernisms] celebrating the exhibition on view at Casa Zalszupin, open until June 22nd. The launch will be followed by a talk between Lilia Schwarcz and Maria Cecília Loschiavo, philosopher and guest author, who, among other works, published a book about designer and architect Jorge Zalszupin.

The publication, which features texts by Schwarcz and Loschiavo, aims to bring “tradition and the contemporary in dialogue, moving away from classifications typical of the still very Eurocentric artistic canon, which sidelined as ‘crafts’, or ‘popular and naïf art’, an entire production that explodes in its ‘Brasilidade’ [Brazilianness] and quality, challenging the most stabilized concept of modernism. It calls for the plural: modernisms”, says the curator.

In the year that marks the 200th anniversary of the first Brazilian Constitution, the exhibition reflects and tensions through exactly 200 works – 182 of art and 18 design pieces – the origin of a country historically socialized by a colonial, white, masculine, European order and, above all, linked to economic elites, and which reserved for Black and Indigenous populations and female artists a secondary place, of silence.
