Maria Martins at the 60th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia
05/09/2024
Maria Martins’ uncompromising sexuality and the inspiration from Indigenous iconography in her work made her something of an outlier within a Brazilian modernist discourse that privileged abstraction and formalism in the 1940s and 50s.
Martins, whose works are seen in the Almeida & Dale’s collection, nonetheless had a successful international career, having works acquired by MoMA (New York), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Buffalo AKG, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Detroit Institute of Art, San Francisco MoMA, among others. At the moment, one of her sculptures, “However” (1948), can be seen at the 60th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia: “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere”, until November 24th 2024, in Venice, Italy.
